The following is a list of common English terms and abbreviations used on the official JLPT website. The list includes terms that are referenced throughout the JLPT website, and in particular, on the N1 and N2 sections.
OIC (Oriental Institute Certified):The tag that applies to foreign test-takers who have passed the JLPT and who plan on taking the test. The tag applies to both N1 results and N2 results.
E1 Test (Enquir) (Shinagawa to Zankyou):The JLPT test which is scheduled to take place in the morning of the test date. E2 Test (Enquir. to Zankyou):The JLPT test which is scheduled to take place in the evening of the test date. N1-1 T (N1-1 Chatto de Tsutookuru):The JLPT test which is scheduled to take place in the morning of the 2nd test date. N1-2 T (N1-2 Chatto de Tsutookuru):The JLPT test which is scheduled to take place in the morning of the 3rd test date. N2 T (N2 Chatto de Tsutookuru):The JLPT test which is scheduled to take place in the evening of the test date.
OEX (Oriental Exchange): The JLPT online registration page for test-takers who plan to hold off on registering on the JLPT website. The purpose of the site is to collect and collate the registration information and payment data from test-takers who plan to take the test earlier than usual, but who plan to pay with a credit card.
The rankings indicated on the Language Proficiency Ratings (JLPT N1, N2, N3) will be reported to the examinee. If the examinee has passed the JLPT, then the examinee will be ranked on the rankings as follows:
The Language Proficiency Ratings (JLPT N1, N2, N3) are made available to Japanese Posts and Telecommunications companies and other organizations to assist them in deciding placement of job applicants. This information is not intended for use outside Japan.
Examinees qualify for the JLPT when they achieve total scores of 240 points or more (pass the test) and all sections have a pass mark to be at or above the sectional pass mark (indicating four or more sections passed). The pass marks for each section is within the range of 70% to 100%. For example, if section 2 has a pass mark of 90%, section 3 has a pass mark of 82%, section 4 has a pass mark of 88%, and section 5 has a pass mark of 78%.
